About these pages

Flowers drawn in fine detail: a large open rose with curling petals, a cluster of spotted lilies, hibiscus blossoms with buds, a zinnia with layered petals and a tied bouquet of peonies and roses. Some are full scenes, like a rose arch beside a garden gazebo and a sunset poppy field by a stone wall. Others are patterns, including a layered lotus mandala, a sunflower ring mandala, a kaleidoscope flower tile, an arched stained glass window and an Art Nouveau lily frame. There is also a lotus rangoli with diya lamps.

All 34 pages are detailed, for teens and adults with time to spare. Coloured pencils let you build each petal in layers, light at the tip and deeper near the centre, and a fine liner can sharpen veins and stamens at the end. Questions

How do I make petals look realistic?

Use two or three shades of one colour. Lay the lightest over the whole petal, add the darker shade where it meets the centre or tucks under the next petal, then blend the join with light, small circles.

Why are poppies worn for remembrance?

Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders during the First World War and inspired John McCrae's 1915 poem In Flanders Fields. They have been worn since the early 1920s to remember those who died in war.

What is a rangoli?

A rangoli is a pattern made on the floor at the entrance of a home, often for Diwali, using coloured powder, rice or flower petals. Lotus flowers and small diya lamps are common designs, as on the lotus pages here.
