About these pages
Pages for Día de los Muertos, celebrated on 1 and 2 November: sugar skulls (calaveras) decorated with flowers and hearts, marigolds (cempasúchil), an ofrenda altar with candles, a flower-crowned girl with face paint, a smiling skeleton playing guitar, and intricate folk-art patterns. Newer pages add monarch butterflies resting on marigolds, a hummingbird among the flowers, a skeleton couple dancing, a guitar decorated with marigolds and a festive table with pan de muerto.
The pages range from easy to very detailed. Sugar skulls are traditionally coloured in bright, joyful colours, which makes them a good way to talk about how the holiday remembers loved ones with celebration rather than fear. For more autumn pages, see Halloween and fall.
Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.
Questions
What is the Day of the Dead?
A Mexican holiday on 1 and 2 November when families remember relatives who have died, with altars (ofrendas), marigolds, candles, food and music.
How should sugar skulls be coloured?
Brightly. Pink, turquoise, yellow and orange are traditional, with a different colour for each flower and pattern.
Is this the same as Halloween?
No. They fall at a similar time of year but Day of the Dead is a celebration of remembrance, not a spooky holiday.
Can I print on A4 paper?
Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
