Accessibility
ColoringPark should work for every parent, teacher and child who uses it, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard or a magnifier.
What we have done
- Readable type. Body text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed by the Braille Institute to make similar letters easy to tell apart, at 16 pixels or larger. Text can be enlarged to 200 percent without anything breaking.
- Contrast. All text meets the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratio of 4.5:1 or better, and interface elements meet 3:1.
- Keyboard. Every link, button, filter and menu can be reached and operated with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. Press / to open search from any page and Esc to close it.
- Descriptions. Every coloring page has a written description of what the drawing shows, used as the image's alternative text and read aloud by screen readers.
- Structure. Pages use proper headings, landmarks, breadcrumbs and labelled controls. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing on every page.
- Motion. Animations are short and decorative, and all of them are switched off when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Touch. Buttons and links are at least 40 pixels tall, and the download buttons stay within reach at the bottom of the screen on phones.
- Printing. The PDFs are pure black lines on white, which also suits people with low vision who colour with high-contrast materials. The "Easy" pages have the thickest lines and the largest spaces.
Known limits
- The PDFs are images of line art and do not contain text to be read aloud; the description is on the web page instead.
- The colour-wash effect when hovering a page is decorative and conveys no information.
Standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, and test with automated tools and by keyboard and screen reader on each release.
