How we measured
Each page's 1200-pixel line art was split into its enclosed areas, the same way the colour online tool finds shapes to fill. Areas smaller than 300 pixels (specks between lines) were left out. Sizes are as printed on US Letter inside half-inch margins, given as the diameter of a circle with the same area; "smaller shapes" is the 25th percentile on each page and "typical" the median. You are welcome to cite these figures with a link to this page.
Questions
How many shapes should a coloring page for a 3-year-old have?
On ColoringPark, Easy pages for ages 2 to 4 have a median of 17 separate shapes to colour, and a typical shape prints about 20 mm across, big enough for a chunky crayon. Pages for ages 4 to 8 have a median of 53 shapes, and detailed pages for older children and adults 145.
What makes a coloring page "detailed"?
More and smaller shapes. Detailed pages on ColoringPark have a median of 145 shapes per page, and their smaller shapes print about 4 mm across, compared with 9 mm on Easy pages. Small spaces suit coloured pencils and fine pens.
How is the most popular list worked out?
It counts downloads of the Letter and A4 PDFs, prints and saved online colourings of each page over the last 30 days. Each browser counts at most once per page per day, and nothing personal is recorded. Character fan-art pages are not included.
