About these pages

Questions

Why are there marigolds and sugar skulls on Halloween pages?

Several pages come from the Day of the Dead, held on 1 and 2 November, straight after Halloween. Marigolds, called cempasúchil in Mexico, are placed on ofrendas because their bright colour and scent are said to guide spirits home.

How do I stop a pumpkin looking flat?

Colour the whole pumpkin in a light yellow-orange first, then add darker orange or a little brown along each rib and at the base. Leave a thin pale strip down the middle of each section as a highlight.

Which pages suit a short colouring session?

The all-over pattern of pumpkins, candy and bats and the round mandala of wrapped sweets and lollipops can be coloured one section at a time, so you can stop anywhere. Full scenes such as the witch's cottage need longer.
