About these pages

Butterflies of many kinds: monarchs with spotted edges, swallowtails with long tail points, a moon moth with trailing tails, a folk-art monarch with swirled wings and a monarch resting on marigolds. Some pages are garden scenes, such as butterflies over a sunflower garden, butterflies and bees in a wildflower meadow, and a peacock fanning its tail among butterflies. There is also a paint-by-number butterfly in five colours and a sugar skull with butterflies for the Day of the Dead.

Most of the 38 pages lean detailed: 25 have veined, shaded or mandala-patterned wings for ages eight and up, and adults often pick these. The 12 pages for ages four to eight have bold outlines, smiling faces and bigger wing spots. For more small creatures, see the bug and insect pages, and for garden scenes, try the flower pages.

Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.

Questions

Are there simple butterfly pages for young children?

Yes. Look for the pages with thick black edges, rounded wings and big dots, such as the bold butterfly and the dotted butterfly. The "Ages 4-8" filter shows the pages that suit children from about four.

How can I use butterfly pages to teach symmetry?

Butterfly wings are symmetrical, so ask children to colour one wing and then copy the same colours and pattern onto the other side. It is a simple way to introduce mirror symmetry in maths.

What is special about monarch butterflies?

Their migration. Every autumn, millions of monarchs fly from Canada and the United States to forests in Mexico, a trip of up to about 3,000 miles. They arrive around the Day of the Dead, which is why they appear with marigolds.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
