About these pages
Sugar skulls, or calaveras, decorated for the Day of the Dead: a smiling sugar skull with flower eyes, one with a flower crown, another with big heart eyes, a skull with a rose crown, one with a heart on its forehead and one wearing a flowered sombrero. Patterned pages include a sugar skull with butterflies and marigolds, an intricate floral skull, a sugar skull, marigold and heart pattern, and a circle of sugar skulls, birds and flowers.
There are 3 easy pages with thick outlines for ages two to four, 4 for ages four to eight and 4 detailed pages for older kids and adults. Sugar skulls are coloured brightly, which makes them a good way to talk about remembering loved ones with celebration rather than fear. For marigolds, altars and more, see the Day of the Dead pages, or the butterfly pages for monarchs.
Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.
Questions
What is a sugar skull?
A calavera is a decorated skull, often made from sugar, placed on ofrendas (home altars) during the Day of the Dead on 1 and 2 November. A name is sometimes written on the forehead to remember someone.
How should I colour a sugar skull?
Brightly. Use pink, turquoise, yellow, orange and purple, giving each flower and pattern its own colour. Fill the eye shapes with a bold colour so the face stands out.
Are sugar skulls scary for children?
No. They are decorated with flowers, hearts and smiles, and they celebrate people rather than frighten. The easy pages, with big flower eyes and thick outlines, are gentle enough for preschoolers.
Can I print on A4 paper?
Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
