About these pages
Tracing worksheets for early writing, each also ready to colour. There is a page for every letter from A to Z, each with a picture: A is for apple, F is for frog, I is for igloo, Q is for quail, V is for volcano and Z is for zebra. Feelings pages let children trace words such as happy, sleepy, nervous, excited and bored. Symmetry pages show a sailing boat, a teddy bear, a pink balloon and a red tomato.
There are 7 easy symmetry pages for ages two to four and 43 pages for ages four to eight. Before tracing, check the grip: a short, chunky pencil or a triangular grip helps small fingers hold it between thumb and first finger. Trace each letter slowly from its starting point, then colour the picture as a reward. For more, see the alphabet pages, the emotions pages and the activity sheets.
Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.
Questions
At what age can children start tracing letters?
Many children are ready at around four, once they hold a crayon with their fingers rather than a fist and can copy lines and circles. Younger children can start with the symmetry pages, which use larger, simpler shapes.
Why should letters be traced from the top?
Most letters in school handwriting schemes start at the top and move down. Learning the right starting point early makes writing smoother and quicker later, and avoids habits that are hard to unlearn.
How can the feelings words be used in class?
Use them for a morning check-in: each child picks the word that matches their mood, traces it and colours the page. Words such as meditative and indifferent are a good way to talk about less familiar feelings.
Can I print on A4 paper?
Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
