About these pages

Big, simple animals for the youngest colourers: a koala hugging a tree trunk, a chubby hippo surrounded by hearts, a bunny hugging a carrot, a flamingo balancing on one leg and a whale spouting water. Puppies and kittens appear in bandanas, scarves and holiday hats, and the sea pages bring a smiling octopus with curly arms, a jellyfish with wavy tentacles and a seahorse with a curled tail. "What am I?" pages ask children to guess a sloth, a raccoon or a beaver, and colour-by-number pages show a smiling bee and a fish over waves.

All 159 pages are easy, with thick outlines and one animal per page for ages two to four. Naming each animal and making its sound while your child colours turns the page into a short word game. Questions

Which easy animals should I start with?

Animals your child already knows, such as the round piglet, the patchy cow, the fluffy puppy on grass or the bunny hugging a carrot. Familiar animals hold a toddler's interest, and round body shapes are easy to fill.

How do the "What am I?" pages work?

Each page asks children to guess the animal before they colour. Ask your child to name it, then talk about where it lives or what sound it makes. The penguin, panda and octopus pages work well at circle time.

Can toddlers do colour-by-number?

Yes, with help. Try the smiling bee, the fish over waves or the koala in pink and grey. Point to each number, find the matching crayon together and fill one area at a time to practise recognising numbers.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
