Questions

Do hedgehogs really carry apples on their spines?

Almost never. It is an old story that turns up in picture books. Hedgehogs eat mainly beetles, caterpillars, worms and slugs, and only nibble fallen fruit now and then, so the apple page is just for fun.

How many spines does a hedgehog have?

An adult European hedgehog has roughly five to seven thousand spines. They are hollow hairs made of keratin, and when the hedgehog is frightened it rolls into a tight ball so the spines point outwards.

When do hedgehogs hibernate?

European hedgehogs usually hibernate from around November to March, in nests of leaves under hedges or log piles. That is why so many autumn pictures show them among leaves, and it makes a good link to a seasons lesson.
