About these pages

A winding forest path is lined with mushrooms, a wooden bridge crosses a forest stream and an old windmill stands above a wheat field. Animals include a fox on a leafy path, a fox curled into a circle of swirls, a squirrel with a swirling tail holding an acorn and a stag whose antlers are made of leaves. There is also an apple orchard with ladders and baskets, a cabin porch with a rocking chair and pumpkins, and a wicker basket of mushrooms and chestnuts.

All 24 pages are detailed, for teens and adults with an hour or more to spare. Autumn leaves look richer when you blend two colours in each, such as yellow into orange or red into brown, and coloured pencils layer better than markers for this. Questions

Why do leaves change colour in autumn?

As the days shorten, trees stop making green chlorophyll and it breaks down. Yellow and orange pigments that were in the leaf all along start to show, and some trees, such as many maples, also make new red pigments.

How do I make the barn and bridge look like real wood?

Lay down a light tan or brown base, then draw the grain with a sharp darker brown pencil, following the line of each plank. A little grey in the shadows under the roof or the rails makes the wood look weathered.

Do squirrels really bury acorns?

Yes. Grey squirrels bury acorns and other nuts one at a time in many separate spots, then dig them up to eat over winter. They do not find them all, and some forgotten acorns grow into new oak trees.
