About these pages
Leaves on their own and in autumn scenes: a big maple leaf with veins, a big oak leaf with wavy lobes, an oak leaf cluster with two acorns and scattered patterned autumn leaves. Wreaths include one of leaves, berries and pinecones and an oak leaf wreath with acorns, and there are mandalas built from maple leaves, acorns and overlapping leaf rosettes. Outdoor pages show kids leaping into a leaf pile, children raking, a boy raking while his dog watches and a wheelbarrow heaped with autumn leaves.
6 of the 27 pages are easy, with thick outlines for ages two to four, 4 are for ages four to eight and 17 detailed pages suit older kids and adults. Match the colours of real leaves from a walk, or slip a leaf under the page and rub over it with the side of a crayon for texture. For more, see the fall pages, the wreath pages and the nature pages.
Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.
Questions
Why do leaves change colour in autumn?
As days shorten, trees stop making chlorophyll, the green pigment. Yellow and orange pigments that were there all along begin to show, and some trees, such as many maples, also make new red pigments before the leaves fall.
How can I tell a maple leaf from an oak leaf?
A maple leaf has pointed lobes spreading from one point, like a hand. English oak leaves have rounded, wavy lobes along a central vein, and oaks grow acorns. The big toddler pages show one of each.
How can I use leaf pages in an autumn display?
Children can colour and cut out the big maple and oak leaves to make a class tree or garland, writing an autumn word on each. The leaf pile and raking scenes make good prompts for a short story.
Can I print on A4 paper?
Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
