About these pages

Santa's helpers at work: an elf painting a wooden toy train, two elves building a rocking horse, an elf on a ladder hanging stars in a tree and an elf and child building a toy together. Others rest, like the elf asleep on a pile of presents, an elf sipping hot cocoa and an elf jumping for joy in the snow, and Santa reads a storybook to two elves. Detailed pages show workshop shelves stacked with toys and an elf in patterned clothes with holly.

There are 6 easy pages with thick outlines for ages two to four, such as a floppy elf hat with a pompom and a kawaii elf hugging a star, 15 for ages four to eight and 3 detailed pages for older kids and adults. Striped tights and patterned hats are a chance to use any colour. For more festive pages, see the Christmas pages, the Santa pages and the Christmas present pages.

Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.

Questions

Where do Christmas elves come from?

Elves come from old Germanic and Scandinavian folklore. The idea of elves making toys in Santa's workshop grew up in 19th-century America through stories and magazine pictures, and by the early 1900s it was a familiar part of Christmas.

What colours should I use for an elf?

Green and red are traditional, often with white fur trim and gold bells or buckles. Add a touch of pink to the tips of the pointed ears and cheeks. For striped tights, colour every other stripe first, then fill the gaps.

How can I use elf pages in class?

After colouring, children can give their elf a name and write a sentence about the job it does in the workshop. The pages of elves painting and building toys lead nicely into a design-a-toy activity before the Christmas holidays.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
