About these pages
Hens, roosters and chicks around the farmyard: a hen sitting on a nest of eggs, a chick hatching from a cracked egg, hens beside a chicken coop with a ramp and a chicken pecking at seeds. A rooster crows among flowers and clouds, and another shows off sweeping tail feathers. Sillier pages include a chick sitting in a teacup, a hen wearing a little hat and a chicken pushing a wheelbarrow of eggs. Detailed pages show a zentangle hen and a hen among garden flowers.
There are 5 easy pages with thick outlines for ages two to four, such as a big letter H with a hen, 13 for ages four to eight and 4 detailed pages for older kids and adults. Chicks are usually coloured yellow, but hens can be brown, white, black or speckled, so children can copy a breed they have seen. See also the farm animal pages, the bird pages and the duck pages.
Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.
Questions
How long does a chicken egg take to hatch?
About 21 days. The hen sits on the eggs to keep them warm and turns them often. When it is ready, the chick chips through the shell with a small egg tooth on its beak, which falls off soon after hatching.
What is the difference between a hen and a rooster?
A hen is a female chicken and a rooster, or cockerel, is a male. Roosters usually have bigger red combs and wattles, long curved tail feathers and a loud crow, while hens lay the eggs.
How do I colour a rooster's tail?
Start with a red comb and wattles, then colour the long tail feathers in dark green, blue-black or bronze, as many roosters have. Leave a thin pale line along each feather so the tail looks glossy.
Can I print on A4 paper?
Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
