About these pages

Unicorns drawn with dense detail for teens and adults: a unicorn with tight curls looking sideways, one wearing a patterned sweater, a spotted unicorn with a chest sash and a winged unicorn rearing on a hillside. Many stand in full scenes, such as a castle courtyard of roses, a waterfall edged with ferns, a tulip field beside a windmill and a winter forest of snowy pines. Others float among bubbles, sparkles, daisies and starry rainbows, and one page is a pattern of galloping unicorns and hearts.

All 29 pages are detailed, with fine lines and many small curls in the manes. Repeat the mane colours in the background so the page holds together, and leave tiny white spots on bubbles and stars for shine. Coloured pencils suit the ringlets, and a scene with a full background can take a few evenings. For simpler versions, see the easy unicorn pages, or try the fantasy pages and the adult pages.

Each design is its own page with a Letter and an A4 PDF, a description, and related pages, so you can print one sheet or a whole set.

Questions

How do I make the curls in a unicorn's mane stand out?

Colour each ringlet darker at its inner edge and lighter towards the outside, and move through a gradient such as pink to purple to blue along the mane. A black fine liner can sharpen outlines lost under heavy pencil.

Can I use alcohol markers on these pages?

Yes, but print on thicker paper or card stock if your printer takes it, and put a spare sheet underneath, because alcohol markers bleed through ordinary copy paper. Test each colour on a scrap first, as they dry darker.

Where does the unicorn legend come from?

The Greek writer Ctesias described a one-horned wild animal from India around 400 BC. In medieval Europe the unicorn became a symbol of purity and strength, and today it is the national animal of Scotland.

Can I print on A4 paper?

Yes. Every page has a Letter and an A4 version. Pick the one that matches your printer.
